06/08/04 - Day 34
Bus to Cesky Budejovice, which was surprisingly nice. The main square was very similar to Krakows, but with a fountain. And no tourists. Not one souvenir shop. We had lunch in a buffet / pub, which was clearly the place where all the locals came on their lunchbreak. It was rampacked and it's not surprising if you can get Venicea stewed steak, chip, a cola and a roll over the square for €1.30. A short trip out to the Budweiser Factory was interesting as it was so untouristy and not as we expected. Had a beer, as one must. For 24p and tried to buy a Budweiser bottle opener but they wouldn't let me. It took me a while to get over this. And onto Vienna by train via Gmuind. The first 4 hours of Vienna was a complete disaster - the train station wasn't what we were expecting (where were the taxis ?!!) and we ended up ringing every youth hostel in Vienna and then walking around in the sun and in the dark for 2 1/2 hours trying to find somewhere to stay. And we were found a pension, which is rather shabby but with a big room (no Manel Haugh and hay closet you fit for a bull), which hints of smoke and horses meets. We nipped down the street for a kebab and doner/kellenmeal and had a great chat with the owner in German - he taught me how to say top and chill. O how I can't wait for my year abroad.
