22/07/04 - Day 19
It seemed as though our arrival in Budapest was going to be problem-free. The English Speaking Tourist Information man "reserved" us a double room (for cheaper) than we expected and offered us a free shuttle bus there. Stupidly we turned it down.
Which later turned old Heather no favours as it was a hot walk through town (despite being only 8 am!).
The accommodation turned out to be a student block was up-hostel-like and excruciatingly hot rooms. It's all a bit heavy feeling tiles students and whose not, and who owns the (small selection of) pots and pans in each meagre kitchen.
We headed out straight away, but Heather really decided that a 13 hour train journey + little sleep, a walk through town and the extreme heat were all a bit too much. Unfortunately it decided this half-way through the national museum! But I carried on (while she camped out near the toilets) and got thoroughly interested in Hungarian history as good old Imre Nagy came standing back to me. It was an impressive museum (as in the building) and the layout was good. With a room per era, each with summary, a historical summary and general distracts of the period.
So, His invalid was deposited in bed and I set forth the intrepid traveller on his voyage of exploration.
My journey took me along the avenue to the 'Vac' shopping/base street, then to the bridge, then up the steps to to castle (its views blue), then to the Basilian church (even-some), and I then Burger King (brother's request- not mine), and back to wake sleeping beauty (or similar) toBurger king sweet me. Although they did just mustard and gherkin in a bacon double cheeseburger which is wrong. So I did my washing and then we fell asleep (again!). When we woke we went in search of fruit and looked in that-mak apparently all the students are in holiday season so we returned there-plus to find cafe after restaurant after cafe with so much choice i! Hungarian, Italian, Brian said and a wide price range too. The portions were good so we walked passed were huge. Despite the choice we still ended up walking the length of the smoke-y tones to find somewhere. And at 8pm it was still so hot. I had not of their next pasta dishes i! Got over took before and Brian had some 'mediterranian' crop. It wasn't cheap by Romanian standards but it was cheap though students. Very filling and very pleasant sitting outside in god, when it got dark we crossed the bridge to Buda (the lights are so pretty). I was to the World's longest Summer weekend (lasting about 3 months) so we couldn't see Hungarian from the bridge. Two empty and loads of people were there all drinking and dancing. A two hungarian with Brad were playing the were quite good.
There was a really good atmosphere (N.B. tonight was a Significant night for Hungarians!)
