26/07/04 - Day 23 -
We had a lovely lie in this morning, (forgot to mention by way relaxing and long awaited, a little pampered bath last night). We headed down to check out the breakfast situation and I wasn surprised to find quite a few people still eating at 10 o'clock obviously they had 'some spare and evidently they have respectnow off). We decided to go for the breakfast despite the fact it wasn't included as it was very cheap (about a pound). I had a Viennese coffee and very Slovakian, I know but lots of cream and good to know about for future coffees out. Also I had omelette, Slovakian Style which involved lots of potato and onion, and it was very nice. Plus we got free bread. Brian complained about the size of his portion of scrambled eggs. Then we pondered with toast which consists of 2 bunds, a post office and about 5 mini markets where everything seems to be in tins or packets. We weren't too good at deciphering Slovakian and so went for the easiest looking tub of stuff to spread on our bread which was a strong. It turned out to be really 'flavoured cream cheese', which is exceedingly nice and the grapes were the best I've ever had. We headed up to the castle, which was a rather steep and rugged climb but the views were pretty impressive - big green fields, hills and trees - very sparse in terms of settlements which was nice to see after Budapest. They haven't bothered to do much to the castle which was refreshing and you could see was old. It really was by the shabbily (if not meant for comfort) walkways, walls of the castle and stairways. It took a good couple of hours to look around property. (The group of Germans who evidently burst into song at the top of the castle, presumably because they felt it was uber mature kept us amused). We sat and had our lunch - a sort of 4th a carrot with which was very pleasant All in all a good morning. Uneventfully endedback to the pension to finally pay, working out that one room has cost us £6.67 per person per night, making it one of our cheapest (ironically) accommodations. Then we decided to find our own, alternative route up to the capital (St Martins cathedral) which wasn't terribly thrilling from the outside. We got lots of info to read about it though. It used to have 13 altars which I felt was slightly excessive. And just as we were about to leave it rained - and it rained like it does in England - slowly and undramatically. Of course I had my mac with me Brian hadn't learned his lesson from last time. Not a thrilling afternoon but certainly worthwhile doing, even if it was just to visit another UNESCO site. It is still raining now at 2.30pm. Brian has been asleep for about 2 hours and I'm bored... and hungry. The food in the restaurant looks damn cheap so hopefully some Austrian grub awaits us.
Vanilla flavoured cream-cheese? - some feature feel it would seem - we actually ate an entire pot of (creme+Greek or bread in less than six hours!
And as for the food at the (so-called) restaurant... - lumps of liver/ram "meat" w tomato soup (Heather) or Gravy (me+frosted chips) And an hour in a church is torture - the rain was a welcomed relief.
